It is intensifying the statement. It changes the feeling, not the meaning.
The speaker wants you to appreciate that you are right where something important happened. The speaker wants you to feel the reality of the historic event. They were there. Now, you are there.
I once visited the courthouse where a famous trial had been held. I visited the actual courtroom where it had taken place. I felt awe. I was not just in the town where the trial had occurred. I was not just in the courthouse. I was in the very room where it had taken place. I was standing on the same floor. My feet might have touched the same spot touched by the defendants' feet.
