When we say we admire someone or something, we are usually thinking about their character or essential qualities. If I admire this person today, I will probably still admire them tomorrow, because I admire them for the type of person they are. When we say we appreciate something, we are usually thinking of a particular thing that has occurred or has been done. We do sometimes say that we appreciate a person, but even then we are usually meaning that we appreciate their contribution to something, or something that they have done.

When you admire someone or something, you find them attractive, pleasant etc. You also respect them in some way. E.g. "He admires those football players for their determination to win every match". When you appreciate something, you understand that it is important or valuable, you are grateful for that. E.g. "I really appreciate what you have done for me. I wouldn't have succeeded if it hadn't been for you".

"Admire" means to believe that someone has done something impressive or important in their life: -- I admire my grandmother because she raised five children by herself. -- I admire my boss because she has made this company successful. -- The art students admire the famous artist because he developed a new style of painting. "Appreciate" means to be grateful to someone or to enjoy that person's presence: -- I appreciate my mom; she always knows what to say to make me feel better. -- I appreciate my best friend because she brings me soup when I am feeling sick. -- The art students appreciate their teacher because she takes more time to help them after school. Hope this helps! Myriam
