flesh
In the following art description the author says "The white gloves allude to flesh and youth but also to burial (the hiding of flesh), flesh itself (the leather), cleanliness". What is the difference between "flesh" and "flesh itself (the leather)"?
Context:
Gentle, too, in its material, but not in its criticism, is the work of Welsh artist Rozanne Hawksley, whose beautiful wreath of white gloves, Pale Armistice (1991), also includes bone fragments and lilies to remind us about what we remember on 11 November. The white gloves allude to flesh and youth but also to burial (the hiding of flesh), flesh itself (the leather), cleanliness, purity, and saintliness. The bone fragments refer to the remains of dead soldiers. The three plastic lilies too bespeak purity but also the Trinity of God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost. The artist states in her notes on the piece that the pale colour is ‘to remind one of the fragile quality of peace and hope’.

I think the author is distinguishing the difference between the concept of "flesh" as a representation of mortality and physical existence and "flesh itself" as a way to refer to actual skin. "Flesh" is conceptual and metaphorical, while "flesh itself" is literal. This is only my guess, as I am not familiar with the text. I hope this helps though. :D
