When you want to say something about yourself. For example, 私自身、料理はあまり得意ではありません. You can just use 私は in this sentence and it is almost same meaning. However, 私自身 spotlight yourself much more than 私. I don't use 私自身 in everyday conversation so often because I just say 私. It is often used in novels or diary I think.
