Hi,
Nico is correct. The verb "to prefer" can be followed by both the infinitive (to eat) or the -ing form of a verb (eating). Other verbs like this are "to like" or "to love" eg "I love swimming in the sea" and "I love to swim in the sea".
Some verbs can only be followed by the infinitive:
Want - I want to go shopping
Need - He needs to earn some money
Other verbs can only be followed by the -ing form of the verb:
Stop - He stopped shouting
Enjoy - I enjoy singing
