It's the stairway to heaven of breakup lines Ted: I don't know what I'm gonna say. (Ted is struggling with how to break up with a girl) Marshall: I'm not ready for a commitment. Lily: Oh, that's such a cliché. Marshall: It's not a cliché, it's a classic. It's the stairway to heaven of breakup lines. What does this sentence mean? "It's the stairway to heaven of breakup lines." (The 'of' here stumps me.)

"Stairway to Heaven" is a very famous song considered to be a classic. The joke means that this "break-up line," the excuse used to end the relationship, is just as classic as that song and can't be overused. As far as the "of"... It is used the same way as "he is the leader of the group" or "he is the genius of the family."

"Stairway to Heaven" is considered one of the greatest songs of all time. So he is implying that his line is great, as well.
