A- either is ok but use "playing " football A1 is a little more formal
B - either is ok but use goal not gate in football
C - I'm assuming this should be they in each sentence. C4 is the most natural and preserving ones sanity is a natural expression but would be used in the singular and it would be unusual to use it for a group of people but maybe for a couple " his parents preserved their sanity by focussing their attention elsewhere" but then the couple are being referred to as a single entity
