Question for natives: do you use "pedestrian" in the meaning "ordinary"? I have found in my SAT book this example of using "pedestrian": For once, can't we do something that isn't so boringly pedestrian? I have never heard either natives say it or write. Is it used in conversations?

Yes, that is fairly common among more sophisticated speakers. It’s not something you’d hear most high school students say, or many poorly educated persons say. The analogy to “pedestrian” is “not involving a high level of challenge or excitement” — just like walking is a boring, everyday, ordinary way of moving from one place to another.

I have never heard of the word being used like that. I actually really like it, it sounds so scholarly hahaha. You can use it if you want to use a bigger word and to sound smart. But it would typically be said as ordinary/normal.

By the way, I can think of ONE popular use of pedestrian in the sense you‘re talking about. There’s a song called Pedestrian at Best by Courtney Barnett. :)
