It is implying that we already know about critters e.g "yes, the critters, oh, I don´t like them". Unfortunately Critters is indeed American Slang so British people like myself find the definite article "the" a bit strange. in this article

If I was writing that article I would not have used the definite article. I assume for Americans, it worlks well.
