Both are ok! However, it is used more often when talking about looks.
For example:
She resembles her mother in temperament, but her father in appearance. (both)
A pet may actually resemble his owner. (character)
With the long, dark hair he resembles my older brother. (looks)

Hello! To use resemble is to make a comparison between two things, most commonly based on appearance.
You could say, "The girl resembled her mother", and it would mean that they looked alike.
You could also say, "He played his favorite song for me, but I thought the vocals resembled the yowling of a dying cat." Here the comparison is between the sound of the singer and the sound of a yowling cat.
Any time you want to compare two things that you judge to be similar, you can use "resemble".

Its just a fancy way of saying the same thing. A lot of words in english mean the same thing but some are seen as fancy
