What does mean "I've had a rough year on the personal front" ? Is this a expression for a unhappy Year ?

Hi Edson,
Yes, you are right. If I say that, it means It's been a difficult year regarding my personal life. Work or business may be good, but I have had some personal problems.
The term "front" alludes to a "battle front" in a war.

I think so. rough can also mean hard, difficult or uncomfortable etc.

The "front" refers to an area of your life:
personal front; marital front; financial front; etc.
rough = difficult.
Now the word "front" is taken from the "sea front". Sometimes the seas are rough, like your emotions. Now put the pieces together and you have your expression.

It means that you have had problems in your personal life, eg a death in your family or a relationship broke up.
