Yes, to burn bridges means to leave yourself no way back, or to leave yourself no opportunity to repair damage. It also means to damage a relationship before it can properly start.
For example, you may say to someone that you dont like them right now and you'd rather not speak to them for a few days.
If you hurl abuse at them and tell them you never want to see them again- THIS is burning your bridges, because there is no way back.

He burnt bridges in front of him (not behind him) which simply means, as Fofa said, 'create future problems for oneself'.
