I'm pretty sure sticking refers to using sticks, wood, or other objects as support for a plant. This is most often done with young plants to hold them up, especially young trees. Cuttings are pieces of plants which are removed or cut off of the plant. I believe this term would mean you have cut off part of a plant and you will try to get it to grow by planting it and giving it support to hold it up.
