What does mean the expresion "The rainforest's great diversity has come at a cost."?

There is no way to know what it means based on that short sentence: there is no context. However, when something "comes at a cost," it means that there is a negative thing that comes with the positive thing. Example: "Using steroids comes at a cost" (you become a better athlete, but the drugs are a danger to your health).
