Both are correct. 'To be' plus 'flown' is the passive. The planes were flown by somebody. 'The planes flew' is active. We use both when talking about the movement of vehicles, air and seacraft

were flown When a plane flies, we refer to its schedule! This plane flies to Tokyo. This bus goes to town. the train goes to Shanghai. But... The boss drove the bus to the garage. The man took the train into the workshop. They flew the plane to Japan. Geddit?
