It might be a direct solution, but so as to prevent this issue from worsening, one possible way is educating young people. For instance, in the case of my home country, Japan, environmental studies are not compulsory in school. As a result, a lot of people are living without underdtanding deeply various issues related to our environment and how our daily lives are depending on limited natural resources, such as oil. I suppose that having regular opportunities to understand environmental problems and discuss about potential solutions from young age is an important step to combat this issue.
