Why do we say: The store is open from 6 am, instead of is opened, or we are close at 7 pm, shouldn't it be we are closed?

1) 'The store is open from 6 am' The word open in the sentence above is an adjective, which is giving information about the shop. 2) 'The store is opened' The sentence above is passive, and passive voice is used to focus on what happens to something. In this case we are talking about what happens to the store (it's opened). In sentence 2 opened is a passive verb. 3) We are close(d) The sentence above is incorrect. Close is not an adjective. It needs the letter d at the end to become an adjective.

Hi, Fletcher rightly mentioned. We say "The shop is open...." for giving information about the state or condition of something. This is one usage of the verb "to be". But if you are using the passive form, then the shop is no longer the focus of the attention which because of this we don't use this sentence in passove! (As simple as that). If you use the passive form, either the previous sentence or the next sentence or adjunct (or complement) is the focus. For example, the shop is opened after the pandemic. Here the phrase is the focus. The shop is opened again by the mayor. A quick note: The shop is opened from 6.... You can say this sentence but here you are not emphasizing the status of the shop (being closed or open). But, actually you are conveying that at 6 o'clock the shop was open ( the focus is on the time and not on the status of shop as being open or closed).

The shop was open. (it was open for business, customers could walk in). The shop was opened. (the passive voice of somebody opened it) So both the sentences are grammatically correct but have different meanings. I have got it. Thanks to everyone of you for taking your time to explain. It is very nice of each and everyone of you.

Pavie We should say: The store is open from 6am until 7pm. We (can) also say: The store openS at 6am and closeS at 7pm. "Is open" uses the passive voice in English. The passive voice describes a situation but does not mention the person (agent) who causes that situation to exist. Two examples of the passive voice: 1. The door is open. (Vs Active voice: The girl opened the door) 2. The window is broken. (Vs The active voice: The boy broke the window) No, we say the store is open not opened when we use the passive voice. but, we say The man (woman) openED the store at 8 o' clock when we use the active voice. I hope this helps 😀
