Like the experiment about “Laurel” and “Yanny,” English learners often can’t understand many sentences even though they are made up of familiar words. So I started thinking about how to solve this problem. What I do is practice listening with movie clips to train my ears. If I keep doing this, I think I’ll gradually accumulate familiarity with these unfamiliar sounds and understand much more.
Here is what I do:
1. I listen to each sentence without looking at the subtitles.
2. By using a special program, I try to identify the parts I can’t hear clearly.
3. I check the sentence to see what I missed or didn’t understand.
What do you think?
