ARMCHAIR + ANY PROFESSION means someone who expresses opinions without being an expert or even participating in the activity.
In an example related to American football, ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK (quarterback is the most important position) means someone who give opinions as if they were an expert, when all they actually do it watch the game on television while sitting in their armchair.
