The sentence is correct. It is the use of passive voice that makes the sentence difficult to understand. Past participles, such as "required", always create unanswered questions. Who or what required? I will supply an answer to that question in order to make the sentence clear. I will say that it is "the teacher" who required. "He reads as much as the teacher required of the class." (active voice)

2. It could be anything. There is not a word to indicate what. 3. The teacher, presumably (or perhaps it is only the academic demands of the class if he wants to do well on the exam), requires that he read a certain quantity of material. 4. To read a certain quantity of material. One could call this a formal sentence structure, and it works well that way, but people don't normally talk this way.

1. I don't think it is, but as a non-native English speaker, I might be understand what you are trying to say. 2. He reads materials or some textbooks that are "required by the class". 3. The class requires him to read materials provided by the class. 4. Him to read stuff.
