What's the difference between 'dirty' and 'unclean'? In the sentence below, can we replace 'unclean' with 'dirty'?
Sentence:
"Pollution is things that make water, air and the ground unclean."

Great question, Lucy.
Both have similar meanings, they are synonyms and can be used interchangeably in most circumstances.
But there are subtle differences:
Unclean is a bit more formal and technical than “dirty”
Dirty is more commonly used and is much more natural sounding, at least for US English.

My humble answer as far as I am concerned. Dirt is something tangable or can be seen by eye, while unclean air or water not necesserally can be seen. Water can be polluted without you know it is drinkable or not and air as well l, it might be polluted with gas that can't be seen or even sense.
