Thus, it sounds very different from tone languages such as Mandarin Chinese or Cantonese. In tone languages, pitch (the degree of highness or lowness of a tone) is used to distinguish word meaning. So a word said with high pitch may have a different meaning than the same word said with a low pitch. ☆ In English, much information is carried by the use of auxiliaries and by verb inflections: is/are/were, eat/eats/ate/eaten, etc. Chinese, on the other hand, is an uninflected language and conveys meaning through word order, adverbials or shared understanding of the context.

Therefore, speaking and listening should make up the lion share of your study. That's what a tutor is for! As for vocabulary, we often memorize individual words, only to forget them soon after. I believe reading articles of your level (or slightly higher) is a much more efficient way to come across phrases and words in context. Context is everything!
