What does it mean to be innovative in business?

In order for a business to survive in today's world, it is important that we regularly review what we are doing and how we are doing it. By considering new ideas and new ways of doing things, and trying to innovate, we can improve on our products/services, increase sales, reduce costs and make our processes more effective and efficient. Innovation is key to increasing profits.

There are several ways a company can be innovative with their products and services. Today we will look at four of them.

1. Using the latest technology to improve your product/service

When we think of innovation, we often think of new technologies. While they might be impressive, we should not use new technologies just because they are available. It is important to consider how the technology can improve our product/service and make a difference to our customer. Companies that produce cars, toiletries, household appliances, etc. often have a large R&D department to work on making their products better.

2. Responding to customer demands by changing what is on offer

By listening to customer feedback, we can get their opinions on how we are doing and find out about what it is that they want. We also need to be aware of changes in customer demands and keep up with the times. When fast-food restaurant McDonald's realised that the market wanted healthier choices, they introduced fruit and salads, while removing the 'super-size' option from their menus.

The objectives and goals of new students have changed a bit, so I want to update the type of lessons I offer.

今日は効果的なテスト勉強についてお話しします。日本語の代表的なテストはJLPTですね。私の生徒さんの中にもJLPTを受験した人がたくさんいますが、レベルにかかわらず全員合格しています。テストを受ける時に一番大事なことは、正しいレベルを選択することです。その次に、テスト勉強の計画です。テストに申し込んだら、テストの日をカレンダーに書いて、テストまでにどれぐらい勉強時間があるか考えます。１年前から勉強を始める人もいれば、３ヶ月前に準備を始める人もいます。

Today I will talk about effective test study. The JLPT is the most well-known and widely-recognised test for the Japanese language. Many of my students have taken the JLPT, and they have all passed, regardless of their level. The most important thing when taking the test is to choose the right level. The second most important thing is to plan your test study. When you sign up for the test, you should write the test date on your calendar and think about how much time you have to study before the test; some people start studying a year in advance, while others start preparing three months in advance.

大切なのは早く始めることではなく、自分に合ったスケジュールを立てることです。たとえば平日が忙しい人は、仕事や学校の休み時間に勉強するより、週末にじっくり勉強した方が集中できるはずです。普段あまり忙しくない人は、毎日決まった時間に勉強することで正しい生活のリズムを作ることができます。「テスト勉強はテストに合格できなければ意味がない」というのは誤解です。誤解とは、人や物について間違った理解をして、正しくないイメージをもつことです。テスト勉強は、自分に合った勉強スタイルを探して試すのにとても役立ちます。さらに、テストに合格できると自信がつきます。

4月にサウジアラビアから帰国したということで、しばらくサウジアラビアに関するエピソードをお話します。今日はサウジアラビアで食べた衝撃的なご馳走についてです。料理や食事に関するフレーズを学べます。

こんにちは、皆さん。お元気ですか？佳子です！今日のテーマは「2年ぶりのサウジアラビアへ～ご馳走～」です。前回もお伝えしましたが、4月にサウジアラビアから帰国したので、しばらくはサウジアラビアに関するエピソードをお届けしたいと思います。今日のフレーズは「断然」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

前回はサウジアラビアの空港に着いたところで終わりましたね。サウジアラビアに着いた翌日、木曜日の夜に家族みんなで夫の妹の就職祝いと私たちを歓迎する会が行われました。両親、お兄さん家族4人、お姉さん家族3人、弟、妹、私たち3人の計14人が集まりました。こういう家でのお祝いの席は年に数回あるのですが、いつも決まってズィビーハという羊肉が乗ったご飯の料理が出ます。直訳すると「犠牲にされた」という意味になります。中東でよく食べられるお祝いの料理です。大きなお皿にたくさんのご飯と骨付きのカットされた羊肉が豪華に盛り付けられています。以前、2回ほど食べたことがありますが、レストランでテイクアウトしたものでした。今回は違いました。なんと、羊1頭丸々、庭で焼いていたのです。屠殺されて皮がはがれた羊をレストランのスタッフが4-5時間地道に焼いていました。焼けたあとは棒付きのままダイニングテーブルに運ばれました。さすがにお肉の味も断然ジューシーで美味しかったです。ご飯にも肉汁が染み込み、言葉にならない美味しさでした。焼く前の羊の写真をこのスクリプトを書く前に夫に送ってもらったのですが、かなりショッキングな画像でしたね。焼けたあとの画像を日本の友人や両親に送ったら「なんやこれー！！？」て驚かれましたが、焼く前はもっと衝撃的だと思います。
今回、屠殺、つまり動物を殺すのは家に着くまでに行われましたが、家で屠殺して処理する家庭もあるそうです。家で行うとなると、後処理がとんでもなく大変になるので、今ではかなり珍しいみたいですが、日本人の感覚からすると考えられないですね。
日本では動物を食用で殺す際、気絶させてから失血させるノッキング法が取られていますが、イスラムでは生きている状態で喉を切ります。屠殺後は「イスミッラー」（神に誓って）と唱えます。
ちなみに皆さんもご存じだと思いますが、イスラム教徒は豚肉を食べませんし、サウジアラビアでは、一切豚肉や豚肉が入った食品は売られていません。肉といえば、羊肉、牛肉、鶏肉、そしてたまにラクダ肉。サウジのお母さんが作ってくれる夕食は鶏肉、羊肉、牛肉の順で多かったです。日本では豚肉が鶏肉に次いで安く、調理もしやすいのでよく使われていますね。羊肉料理は日本だとジンギスカンとよばれる焼肉が北海道で有名です。
こんな話をしていたら羊肉料理が恋しくなってきました。皆さんもズィビーハ食べてみたいですか？今日のフレーズは「断然」でしたね。一番よくつかわれる意味は「ずばぬけて。なみはずれて。」と「きっぱりと心に決めるさま」です。英語だとby farやdefinitelyです。「このアニメのほうが断然おもしろい。」や「私は断然、朝パン派だよ。」という使い方になります。日常会話でよく使われるので、機会があれば使ってみてくださいね。
