Description
English shows belonging two ways: "Amma's house" and "the key of the door". English speakers translate directly and say "veedu ammayude", putting the owner after the thing, as in "house of Amma". In Malayalam the owner always comes first and takes an ending, then the thing follows. In this episode: • The pattern: owner-ending, then thing • -ude: after vowels and ൾ, ർ • -nte: after ൻ (n) • -inte: after -am, half-u and consonants • Chains: my mother's house • Parts, prices and times of things • Whose is it? • An invented scene: whose umbrella? • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: അമ്മയുടെ വീട് (ammayude veedu) = Amma's house അവന്റെ ബാഗ് (avante bag) = his bag വാതിലിന്റെ താക്കോൽ (vaathilinte thaakkol) = the key of the door അമ്മയുടെ (ammayude) = Amma's കുട്ടിയുടെ (kuttiyude) = the child's മീരയുടെ (Meerayude) = Meera's ചേച്ചിയുടെ (chechiyude) = Chechi's അവളുടെ (avalude) = her അവരുടെ (avarude) = their നിങ്ങളുടെ (ningalude) = your (polite) നമ്മുടെ (nammude) = our (including you) ഞങ്ങളുടെ (njangalude) = our (not including you) അവന്റെ (avante) = his അർജുന്റെ (Arjunte) = Arjun's അച്ഛന്റെ (achante) = Achan's ചേട്ടന്റെ (chettante) = Chettan's അപ്പൂപ്പന്റെ (appooppante) = Grandpa's എന്റെ (ente) = my നിന്റെ (ninte) = your (casual) അതിന്റെ (athinte) = its എന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ വീട് (ente ammayude veedu) = my mother's house അവന്റെ ചേച്ചിയുടെ മകൾ (avante chechiyude makal) = his older sister's daughter മീരയുടെ അച്ഛന്റെ കാർ (Meerayude achante car) = Meera's father's car Learn Spoken Malayalam at Home: a complete course in everyday spoken Malayalam for English speakers.
