Intermediate Plateau Have you heard of the Intermediate Plateau? It's a stage in the language learning process where you've already riched the intermediate level, usually B2, but from now on your progress just seems to slow down and you feel stuck at it, like you're not making any more progress at all. I plan to take the TOEFL's exam to prove my fluency in English and have it on my CV as well but here's the deal: I'm scared to spend my money on this test and the result comes as a B1 or B2, which is pretty good but not enough for me. The problem is that I also don't know how to solve this problem. I've been listening to English stuff, I've been reading, I've been writing but nothing seems to push me forward. Have you ever faced this problem? What did you do to reach the next level?

It's a stage in the language learning process where you've already reached the intermediate level, usually B2, but from then on, your progress just seems to slow down. And you feel stuck there, like you're not making any more progress at all. (any more progress or any progress at all. This is redundant.)

Your written English is excellent, and I'd be interested in hearing your spoken English. I would suggest studying sentence structure and how to properly use punctuation marks. I changed what I could without completely rewriting or rewording your original sentences.

As for overcoming this plateau, how much do you actively interact with English? Do you speak? Do you talk or write about what you read/listen to?

I have the same problem with my Spanish. Honestly, I just pay community tutors to help me with my speaking and writing because casual language exchanges don't help me improve anymore. I'm including notebook corrections in my argument because I need more focused, individual attention to push me passed my current level.

I haven't heard of the intermediate plateau, but the experience is familiar to me. This is my take on it : at a B2 level you are able to work comfortably in the language in many respects, although you could never claim proper fluency. To achieve this could take years of regular exposure to the language, and you don't have time for that now. So go ahead and take the test ; if you get a B2 this will be proof of your ability, as all the standard grammar, etc. is needed for this level. Then continue to work to break through this barrier - it can be done but it takes time. Incidentally, don't judge yourself by the standards you see in posts on this site ; half of those claiming C1 or C2 in English are not as good as they would like to believe.

The only solution I know: Speaking with natives and asking questions via Skype, hangouts or WhatsApp . Reading and writing is futile, you will make more mistakes and improve when you talk todos os dias.
