I feel as though I haven't made significant progress in a while. This feeling overtakes me even as I work consistently. I am at a lost as to what to do to overcome this.
Common patients:
Intermediate level learners.
What I plan to do when I experience a language plateau:
While it is very tempting to give up learning at this moment, I choose to persevere through it and wait for the light at the end of the tunnel. The article has shared 4 ways to overcome this, and I add my twist to each plus one more method:
1. Set SMART goals
Making sure my goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound makes it easy to make use of the next tip, which is:
2. Track progress
Sometimes, I need to reflect and look back to see how far I've come. I'll feel encouraged and gain perspective. Thinking in years and not months and days also helps me to realise language learning is a marathon, not a sprint.
3. Challenge myself
Perhaps the lack of progress is a sign that I need something more challenging to work toward. The adrenaline rush I get from that is just what I need to scale up my next language mountain.
4. Seek expert advice
I'll find a teacher or native speaker to help me cross over that hurdle or gain a new mindset. They are the experts for a reason and will have something to offer.
5. Have Fun
Finally, rediscovering my passion for language learning by having fun as I learn. What was it that drew me to learn the language in the first place? May it drive me on to new heights.
What do you think? Hope you found this helpful :)
