Hello, I’m Maia!
Passionate about languages and an aspiring polyglot!
My native languages are Norwegian and English.
I'm currently based in Norway where I grew up, and am working as a freelance journalist here.
For my studies, I moved to the UK and Ireland where I got a Bachelor in Social Anthropology and a Masters in Creative Writing.
During an exchange year in Italy as a teenager, I learnt fluent Italian in about three months. At university I enjoyed the challenge of learning some Urdu. Currently I am learning Spanish and I hope to add it to my "speaks fluently" list soon!
My two great passions are literature and music, and I am always looking to learn more about other cultures.
Moi en tant que professeur
My theory is that the best way to learn a language is through regular exposure and practice! Hence my approach to teaching is conversational and informal, focusing on verbal communication.
I am a good fit for you if:
1. You want to improve your conversational Norwegian.
2. You want to learn Norwegian by exposure and by actively using it, rather than passively observing or listening.
3. You want to speak like a native, by learning common phrases and expressions.
4. You already speak some Norwegian, and can hold a basic conversation. I will help you improve your pronunciation, vocabulary and how to sound more local!
5. You love dialects! (I grew up in Stavanger).
Mes leçons et ma méthode d'enseignement
With me, you will get to focus on developing your conversational skills through exposure to and active use of the language.
As my approach is informal, I use grammar primarily as a tool to help my students navigate spoken Norwegian with more ease.
If your goal is to be able to converse with locals about any topic, rather than be a master of Norwegian grammar, I am a good fit for you!
I focus on the reality of using Norwegian outside of a classroom setting, and encourage my students to pick conversation topics that are of interest to them.
Homework may consist of me recommending a film, series or a news/commentary piece to watch, which we will then discuss/dissect during class.

I had a fantastic Norwegian session with Maia today. She explained everything clearly, corrected me kindly, and made the lesson both productive and extremely enjoyable. I left feeling confident and motivated to keep learning. Highly recommended!!

Det var en veldig produktiv og hyggelig samtale der jeg fikk rom til å øve på variert ordforråd. Maia er dyktig og engasjert. Anbefales som lærer på det sterkeste. :)
