Yes, this is normal. It is generally called autocorrect out predictive text. It is a feature on many smartphones that will predict your word choice. This feature should be able to be turned off on most smart phones.

Honestly, the best way to improve is to have conversations with those who speak the language. You'll be able to get a baseline of what you know and can then improve from there and study the vocabulary that you didn't understand.
