- Maggie, it's been a long time since I corresponded with you. I just read the comments on the meaning of "spiritual." Although "religious" is one of the connotations of that word, the primary meaning refers to the spirit , the "vital principle or animating force in living beings,." as opposed to any physical elements. Reference to religion is a secondary meaning. For example, each of us experiences spiritual enjoyment in a different way, some through music, some through creative endeavors, etc. In my younger days I hiked and camped in the Rocky Mountains. Climbing to the top of the Continental Divide with a 20 or 25 kilo pack is not always easy, but the spiritual enjoyment of reaching the top is worth it. It has nothing to do with religion, for I am not a religious person, but rather with a sense of enjoyment, accomplishment, pleasure, satisfaction, harmony, happiness etc., all rolled into one.0 vote(s)3 février 20170
- "Can" is one of the most commonly used modal verbs in English. It can be used to express ability or opportunity, to request or offer permission, and to show possibility or impossibility. "Could" is used to express possibility or past ability as well as to make suggestions and requests. "Could" is also commonly used in conditional sentences as the conditional form of "can." "Will" is used with promises or voluntary actions that take place in the future. "Will" can also be used to make predictions about the future. "Shall" is used to indicate future action. It is most commonly used in sentences with "I" or "we," and is often found in suggestions, such as "Shall we go?" "Shall" is also frequently used in promises or voluntary actions. In formal English, the use of "shall" to describe future events often expresses inevitability or predestination. "Shall" is much more commonly heard in British English than in American English; Americans prefer to use other forms, although they do sometimes use "shall" in suggestions or formalized language "Would" is most commonly used to create conditional verb forms. It also serves as the past form of the modal verb "will." Additionally, "would" can indicate repetition in the past "Should" is most commonly used to make recommendations or give advice. It can also be used to express obligation as well as expectation. - Speaking is a physical skill and physical skill can be improved only by physical activity. As Nadia said, “your mouth has to get used to the language.” For example, you cannot learn how to play tennis by reading about tennis. Reading aloud is also helpful. I taught spoken English to adults in Taiwan for a number of years and one of their daily homework assignments was to read the following days lesson aloud several times at home. They found it helpful. In fact, if I would forget to give the homework assignment, they would request it before leaving. Aural comprehension (听力) is the same. It is improved by listening. It could be helpful to have a printed version of whatever you are listening to.0 vote(s)22 avril 20160
- “Scared to death” is an idiom. The meaning of an idiom comes from the phrase, not the individual words. Generally, words cannot be substituted in idioms at random and still have the idiom retain the same meaning. Your example, “cute to death” would be completely meaningless in English because, grammatically we have no such idiom using those words.0 vote(s)22 avril 20160
- “Armario” can be translated differently in different parts of the US. In my area it is called an “armoire.” It is sometimes accented on the second syllable giving it a French pronunciation, and also commonly accented on the first syllable, sounding like the English word, "armor." I think in some areas it is called a "wardrobe."0 vote(s)23 novembre 20133
