For Arabic speakers who meet Malayalam every day — employers, colleagues and neighbours of the Malayali workforce across the Gulf — and for Malayalis in the Gulf who want to see how their two languages sit against each other. I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken. THE RELATIONSHIP, AND THERE IS A REAL ONE Arabic is Semitic, Afro-Asiatic. Malayalam is Dravidian. Unrelated families, unrelated ancestors. But they have been in contact for a very long time and the contact left real marks. Arab traders were on the Malabar coast for well over a thousand years, and Arabic was the language of Indian Ocean trade for centuries. The result is a substantial Arabic vocabulary layer in Malayalam, strongest in the north and among Kerala's Muslim communities. THE ARTEFACT EVERY ARABIC SPEAKER SHOULD KNOW അറബി മലയാളം — Arabi Malayalam — Malayalam written in the Arabic script, with letters added to carry the sounds Arabic does not have. A whole literature exists in it: religious works, poetry, the Mappila song repertoire, textbooks. A Dravidian language, written right to left, in an Arabic hand. WHAT HELPS YOU The shared vocabulary is real and larger than you expect, particularly around trade, law, religion and everyday Malabar speech. You already produce sounds English speakers struggle with, and you are used to a script that marks vowels differently from Latin. WHAT WILL MISLEAD YOU Malayalam is verb-final; Arabic is not. Malayalam has no definite article and no root-and-pattern morphology — words are built by stacking suffixes, not by threading consonants through a template.
