説明
This course has told you three times to read the newspaper. The instruction is useless without a method, because the Malayalam newspaper is a specific and difficult register. WHY IT MATTERS Kerala's major dailies have circulations in the millions and newspaper reading is a genuinely mass daily habit that cuts across class. A tea shop has a paper. A barber shop has a paper. Which means two things for you: everybody has read the same thing this morning, so it is the default topic of conversation — and it is a free, daily, unlimited supply of reading material delivered to your door. THE DIFFICULTY, STATED HONESTLY Newspaper Malayalam is the formal written register: full verb forms, long sentences, participial chains, a very high density of Sanskrit vocabulary. It is not what anybody speaks. Headlines are harder still — verbs dropped, compounds stacked, a single long word carrying what would be a whole clause in speech. You will open one for the first time and understand almost nothing, and conclude your Malayalam is worse than you thought. It is not. You have met a different register. THE FOUR-STAGE METHOD One: headlines only, ten minutes a day. Do not read articles. News vocabulary repeats relentlessly — two hundred words unlock most headlines, and you will meet all two hundred in your first fortnight. Two: one SHORT article, completely, with a dictionary — and choose a story you already know in English, so prior knowledge supplies the gaps. Three: the same story in two languages. The single most efficient reading exercise available to you, it costs nothing, and almost nobody does it. Four: copy one paragraph by hand. Motor memory speeds recognition, and copying forces you to see every character rather than skim. THE FRONT-PAGE VOCABULARY സർക്കാർ government · മന്ത്രി minister · മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി chief minister · മന്ത്രിസഭ cabinet കോടതി court · വിധി judgment · കേസ് case · അന്വേഷണം investigation തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് election · നേതാവ് leader · പ്രതിപക്ഷം opposition സമരം agitation · പ്രതിഷേധം protest · ഹർത്താൽ hartal അപകടം accident · മരണം death · പരിക്ക് injury മഴ rain · ജാഗ്രത alert · ജാഗ്രതാ നിർദ്ദേശം a weather warning വില price · വർധന increase · കുറവ് decrease പദ്ധതി scheme · പ്രഖ്യാപനം announcement · തീരുമാനം decision ആരോഗ്യം health · വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം education സംസ്ഥാനം state · ജില്ല district · കേന്ദ്രം the centre, meaning the union government പ്രസ്താവന statement · ആരോപണം allegation THE FOUR HEADLINE PATTERNS The verb dropped entirely, leaving a noun phrase. The bare past participle where speech would use a full verb. Stacked compounds. And the colon, used constantly to link a topic to a comment. Once you see those four, headlines stop being impenetrable and become merely terse. Quizzes below. Dr. Reshmi R Nair — SpeakMalayalam.
