The Falling Offer: "Gravy.", "Tea.", "Sit." and the Classic Misreading of a Fall | Understanding Indian English #073
説明
One of the most famous cases in the study of cross-cultural communication comes from a staff canteen in Britain in the 1970s. Serving staff newly arrived from South Asia were offering gravy to customers with the single word "Gravy." said with a falling tune. The British customers heard it as rude, as if the servers were saying "this is gravy, take it or leave it".
What you will learn:
• The canteen case, step by step
• Why the offer falls
• The offers and invitations that fall
• Suggestions that fall
• Re-reading tone through the speaker's system
• When A fall is not an offer
• Scenes
• Practice: decode the scene
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
The canteen case is drawn from published cross-cultural communication research of the 1970s and 1980s, retold here for learners.
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
