Offering Condolences in Malayalam — What to Say and Not Say | Learn Malayalam #326
説明
What to say in Malayalam when someone has died — the words, the softer forms Malayalis actually use, and the far more important question of what not to say and what to do instead.
This is the hardest thing to do in a foreign language, and the one where getting it right matters most. The tone of this lesson is plain.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
THE WORDS
മരണം - maranam - death
മരിക്കുക - marikkuka - to die
മരിച്ചു - marichu - died; plain, and used
അനുശോചനം - anusochanam - condolence; the word you need most
THE SOFTER FORMS, WHICH ARE WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY HEAR
Malayalam, like every language, prefers not to say it directly.
അച്ഛൻ പോയി - achan poyi - father has gone; poyi is the gentlest form
നിര്യാതനായി - niryathanayi - passed away; the formal wording of newspapers and announcements
കാലം ചെയ്തു - kalam cheythu - passed away; respectful, used of clergy and elders
THE RITES, ACROSS THE THREE COMMUNITIES
ശവസംസ്കാരം - shavasamskaram - the funeral rites
ദഹിപ്പിക്കുക - dahippikkuka - to cremate
ശ്മശാനം - shmashanam - the cremation ground
സെമിത്തേരി - semitheri - the Christian cemetery
ഖബർ - khabar - the Muslim grave
ഖബറടക്കം - khabaradakkam - the burial
പുല - pula - the period, commonly sixteen days, in which a family is ritually set apart
ബലി - bali - the memorial offering made to ancestors
WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU ARRIVE
ഞാൻ അറിഞ്ഞു - njan arinju - I heard
Said quietly, on arrival. That is often the whole of it.
AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD OF TALKING
Sit. Stay longer than feels necessary. Accept the tea. Do not ask how it happened. Do not offer explanations, comfort or philosophy. Presence is the message; in Kerala, showing up is the condolence.
Save this one. You will be glad you learned it before you needed it.
