Every word in this course is also given in say-it spelling, and you could finish the whole thing and speak perfectly well without reading a single letter. THE SURVIVAL KIT YOU ALREADY OWN You have been meeting the same handful of words all course — the ones that appear on nearly every sign in Kerala. You already know them by ear; you simply have not seen them. കട (kada) - shop ഹോട്ടൽ (hotel) - which in Kerala means an eating place ചായ (chaaya) - tea ഊണ് (oonu) - the midday meal മീൻ (meen) - fish വഴി (vazhi) - way, route ആശുപത്രി (aashupathri) - hospital സ്റ്റാൻഡ് (stand) - the bus stand THE ONE MECHANISM THAT UNLOCKS THE REST Malayalam writing is not an alphabet in the English sense. Each consonant carries a built-in "a", and the vowel signs hang off it — before, after, above, below.
