ここで防護スーツをぬいだら、免疫力のない空中帝国の人間は、ひとたまりもありません。
カンパネラは岩場に腰をおろし、地上5000メートルにある空中帝国を見上げました。
そのときでした。

「だれだ！」

ふりかえると、『森』の住人たちがならんでいました。
その中心に、赤毛の女が立っていました。
まちがいありません。あのときの女の子です。
「なにものじゃ！」
大男が大きな声をあげました。

赤毛の女は一歩まえに出て、いいます。
「森のものではなさそうね。なんの用かしら？」

カンパネラは とっさに言葉をかえします。
「キミに、あいにきたんだ」

「なにをいっているんだ」と　『森』の住人たちは にらみつけてきました。　
が、赤毛の女は顔色ひとつ変えません。
「ウソおっしゃい。外からきたものが どうして私をしっているの？」

カンパネラは 大きく息をすって　きもちをととのえ、こたえました。
「むかし、あの岩のうえで笛をふいてたろ？」
赤毛の女は目を丸くしました。
