Marta siempre había oído decir que los espejos guardan secretos, pero nunca lo creyó… hasta aquella noche. Estaba en su nueva casa, una antigua mansión que había heredado de su abuela. En el pasillo principal había un gran espejo enmarcado en madera oscura. Esa noche, al pasar frente a él, notó que su reflejo no imitaba su movimiento. Se detuvo, asustada, y vio cómo su imagen sonreía de manera siniestra.

Aterrada, retrocedió, pero su reflejo se quedó allí, mirándola fijamente. De repente, la imagen levantó la mano y señaló hacia la puerta del desván. Marta sintió un escalofrío, pero su curiosidad fue más fuerte que su miedo. Subió las escaleras y abrió la puerta crujiente. En el centro del desván había una caja polvorienta. Al abrirla, encontró una nota escrita con letra temblorosa: "No mires detrás de ti".

Su corazón se detuvo. Sintió una respiración helada en su nuca y escuchó un susurro que decía su nombre. Cerró los ojos, pero el miedo la paralizó. Al mirar nuevamente al espejo, su reflejo ya no estaba. En su lugar, una figura oscura le susurró: "Ahora tú estás al otro lado". Marta gritó, pero su voz quedó atrapada en el cristal. Desde esa noche, cada vez que alguien pasa por ese pasillo, jura escuchar un golpe suave que viene del espejo… como si alguien pidiera salir.

How Malayalam became itself — one of the better-documented cases anywhere of a language separating from its parent.

The mechanism is always the same four things:
1. GEOGRAPHY. A barrier reduces contact.
2. POLITICS. Separate rulers mean separate centres of prestige.
3. DIFFERENTIAL CONTACT. One side gets a heavy dose of another language; the other does not.
4. INTERNAL INNOVATION. Each side changes on its own, and the changes do not cross.

Latin split into Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian exactly this way. Old Norse split into Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish the same way. Malayalam split from Tamil the same way, more recently, with all four factors unusually visible.

I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.

THE BARRIER
The Western Ghats. A narrow coastal strip cut off from the Tamil interior by a mountain wall, with a coast that traded more easily with the sea than with the country on the other side of the hills.

THE POLITICS
Rulers whose centre of gravity sat on the coast. Once the courts, the temples and the schools are on your side of the mountains, the prestige forms of speech stop being imported from the other side.

THE LARGEST SINGLE FACTOR
From roughly the first millennium, Sanskrit became embedded in Kerala's temple, court and scholarly life to a degree it never reached in the Tamil country, where a strong indigenous literary tradition and later a purist movement resisted it. Malayalam absorbed Sanskrit not merely as vocabulary but structurally — which is why a Malayalam sentence can carry a Sanskrit phonology that a Tamil sentence will not.

That is why the two languages, so close in their bones, feel so different in the mouth.

Where Malayalam Came From — How It Separated from Tamil | Learn Malayalam #344

En este episodio se aborda el duelo migratorio y se ofrecen consejos para adaptarse a un nuevo país. 

Cada persona atraviesa un proceso único cuando migra, pero todas se enfrentan a la pérdida al hacerlo: de la tierra natal, de roles y estatus social, de identidad cultural, de relaciones sociales, de seguridad y de expectativas, así como un cambio de idioma. Como toda pérdida estas conllevan un duelo. 
La adaptación se ve influenciada por factores como la naturaleza de la migración, oportunidades laborales, acceso a servicios de salud y educación, actitud de la sociedad receptora, políticas migratorias y apoyo social.
Pero hay cosas que se pueden hacer a nivel individual para gestionar las emociones y conseguir una mejor adaptación.

Si has migrado a un nuevo país y te reconoces en alguna de estas frases déjame decirte que estás pasando por tu duelo migratorio. 
El duelo es un proceso que nos ayuda a elaborar emocionalmente las pérdidas. Y por si todavía no has conseguido encontrar el equilibrio emocional, vamos a ver qué puedes hacer para conseguirlo.
* Planifica con tiempo todo lo que puedas, esto te ayudará a tener más control sobre tu vida y te protegerá del estrés.
* Establece metas realistas 
* Busca conectar con la comunidad local o con personas que estén pasando por situaciones similares a la tuya
* Cuida tu alimentación, haz ejercicio y descansa. 
* Aprende el idioma local: comunicarse de forma efectiva nos ayuda a sentirnos conectados y seguros.
* Y, por último, reconoce tus emociones y permítete sentir. Por supuesto, si lo necesitas busca ayuda profesional. 
Sé paciente y recuerda que al enfrentar los desafíos y las pérdidas, también estás construyendo una nueva vida.
