コミュニティ チューター[파묘: A New Korean Slang with a Dark Twist]
Today, let’s explore a unique Korean expression that has taken on a life of its own: 파묘 (pa-myo).
What does 파묘 mean?
Originally, 파묘 simply means “to dig up a grave to relocate or rebury.” However, with the release of the Korean occult film 파묘 earlier this year, the term has gained an expanded meaning, turning into a trendy expression in online discussions.
How did this happen?
In the movie 파묘, the act of grave-digging unleashes a terrifying evil spirit. Since the film’s release, 파묘 has transformed into a meme-like expression on the internet, used to describe situations where hidden truths—often negative or troubling—are suddenly exposed to the public, sometimes because of one person’s comment or action.
For example,
누군가의 발언으로 인해 파묘됐다
people might say, “Someone’s comment caused it to 파묘,” or
최근 파묘된 진실
“The recently 파묘된 (revealed) truth.” The meaning here goes beyond literal grave-digging, implying that something buried or concealed has been “unearthed,” with potentially troubling consequences.
Other Ways 파묘 Is Used
Now, 파묘 can also be used whenever a hidden problem or scandal comes to light, especially if it shakes things up. Whether it’s a public figure’s past, a company scandal, or a political cover-up, people are applying this term in many contexts.
