What makes a person memorable?

There are people who are easier to remember than others for the very simple reason that they are distinct. They have unique characteristics that make them memorable, it can be a physical characteristic or a personality trait. When I hear the name Marilyn Monroe, I immediately think about the infamous white dress and a mole on her face because I can’t remember any other celebrities with moles. I also remember someone because of their voice, I have a friend whose laugh is so unique that when I think about her, even when she is not around, I can vividly hear her laughing.

There are people whom we associate with certain events in our life. I have met so many runners in a race, but I only remember those I spoke with or people who performed really well and those who performed pretty badly. I can also remember people who are extremely kind or extremely arrogant. Usually those in the middle, I can’t remember them.

totally agree. as a teacher, ican't remember all the students, because there are just too many of them. i tend to remember top grade students as well as those naughty ones. that's my personal experience.

First, there is the matter of attention grabbing. The <em style="color: rgb(0, 102, 204);">average</em> is by definition the center line of a data distribution, around which the bulk of the data points are clustered (sorry about the statistical reference). One does not notice the clustered data points, one notices the outliers. In that too, the negative outliers are forgotten in time but the positive ones tend to be remembered.

From a human perspective, whom do we remember? First, there is our close group, family and friends. Then come those outside that group who have authenticity, credibility, dependability, kindness and charisma. Is that a tall order? Maybe. But that's the way it works. Those are the traits that make one a positive outlier.
