The Gap Between Education and Labor Market: A Taiwan Experience Nowadays, almost every Taiwan student wants to get a university degree. The low fertility and the redundant establishment of universities make higher and higher enrolment ratio. While the youth are high educated, they suffer from unemployment and low wages. Meanwhile, the enterprises face severe problem of structural vacancy of employees. Many scholars acclaimed the problems mentioned above are rooted in the insufficiency of technical and vocational education. In my country, there’s kind of credentialism. Many of our teenagers work hard to obtain a diploma instead of learn practical skills or get well-training. Therefore, what they learn from school is often alienated from the labor market. As Douglas mentioned in his essay, there may be some problem of resources distribution between public and private schools. So are the challenges we encounter in Taiwan. The disadvantage schools are not able to afford a better environment of learning and appropriate teachers, especially when it comes to vocational training in school. What’s worse, in our traditional perception of education, those who are enrolled in vocation schools are mostly underachieved students. It’s time for us to rethink of the value of education, and to make some reform of education system. Most of us should not pursue advanced diploma without the linkage with industries.

The psychologist perspective is really interesting and persuasive! Even in our familiar language, it's more difficult to express the emotional/illogical/abstract feeling than make a rational argument. After all, our language learning usually start with logical texts instead of discovering the stream of consciousness.

The difference of two article above I have written reminds me a study in Psychology. Do you know people tend to be more rational when using foreign language? The logic behind this is quite intuitive as experts said: when using foreign language, we have to think more to speak them out/write them down, which force we put more cognitive efforts by having more activities in pre frontal cortex, meanwhile, we also suppress the activities where generate the emotional feeling. Well, I remember some people also argue it's the English itself is more logic than Mandarin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefrontal_cortex

Knowing what your goal and then you could know how to design it, as you said. You want the education serving for the national industry? or you want the education serving for only discovering young potentials? Well, many countries like to channel young into both channels, but there is a condition that should meet. The idea of there is neither lowliness nor nobleness in careers should be realized to some extent in the society, otherwise, no person is stupid enough to go to vocational education to be a lower class in a society. Arguably, it's very hard to have a system that increase efficient and equality at the same time, this is why most education system in advanced countries only emphasis the second type. Moreover, It's not the necessarily bad to wider the class gap between upper and lower class in the country by having this type education system. As long as this system is stable and the channel between upper and lower is flow. I am not going to the details but whatever government's policies and cultural factors play and how their interact with each other, people in upper class should have hold their accountable to lead the nation, and also people in lower class should at least perceive they always have the choice to go up. The degree of matter of this conditions could be obtained by looking at people's attitude toward poor and rich. Sadly to say, hatred to the rich and look down on the poor is always a common phenomenon in Chinese society, whether this is something to do with Chinese culture is another story, but this is why Taiwan can't meet the condition, also China is facing this situation right now.
