complete blackout Sometimes it's very difficult to express myself in English or Arabic because while I am talking to the other person, I am translating words from Dutch to English or Arabic in my head! I don't know if there are more people with the same problem. It's really frustrating, especially when I am having an interesting conversation and I get stuck, because I can't find the right words. My face turns red and I can feel the sweat on my hands. : ( When this happens, it's like having a complete blackout. My brain freezes, and I don't know how to continue the conversation. I feel completely lost and I try to continue the conversation but without expressing myself. I am glad that this doesn't happen on a daily base. But if you have tips or advice please let me know. : )

I agree with Agent Baka-- it's good to try to express what you want to say in more basic terms. Sometimes breaking your ideas up into shorter, simpler sentences helps. If it's simply a vocabulary issue you can stall a little by saying "what's the word?" and perhaps describing what you're trying to say in different terms. English is my first language and I still have to do that sometimes! Also, breath and be willing to laugh or shrug it off! If you're relaxed about it your conversation partner will likely be relaxed about it, too.

If you can't remember the word, you can try to describe it. Last week I forgot the word "cheburek" and described it to waiter as "fried bun with meat". But he didn't get it, anyway :)
