Freeganism
Modern society is often criticized for ("as" probably works too) being too wasteful. However, a small group, the so-called "Freeganists", arose and shocked people. By taking food from dumpsters instead of buying it, they are fighting against the consumption-society. They are saying that their lifestyle is not only eco-friendly, but also a cheaper alternative. The question is, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this chosen lifestyle?
On the one hand, freeganists are doing something good for the environment; the discarded food is still usable, and by consuming this food they are reducing the demand for food. The supermarket has to throw away food that is not sold before the expiration date, but this date is only precautionary and the food is still fresh. So to say it is not safe is actually not true. However, for poor people and students this is a cost-saving endeavor. (lucrative implies money is earned whereas I think you mean that money is not spent or saved) Not even one dollar is spent.
On the other hand, though, one might say that this actually ruins our economy. The economy is based on people buying stuff; by not doing this the whole principle will not work. In addition, dumbster-divers are looked down upon by society. (think this is what you mean here)
In sum, freeganism is eco-friendly as well as ideal for poor people, because one can get fresh food for free. However, it ruins our economy and freeganists are not welcomed. In my opinion, freeganism is a good thing, but I have to admit that I would never go dumbster-diving.
