Verbs with direct or indirect object (exercise number two) These sentences are from my English grammar textbook but there's no an answer key.   May I ask for your help, please?   Thank you very much in advance for your attention.   Write 1 or 2 after each of the following sentences, to indicate if they are structures of type 1 or 2. Then rewrite each sentence using the other structure. Remember to choose between 'to' or 'for'. Type 1 = verb + indirect object + direct object Type 2 = verb + direct object + preposition + indirect object 01) She handead me the certificate. (TYPE 2) They sent their uncle a fax. 04) Grandad is telling the children a story. (TYPE 1) Grandad is telling a story to/for Children. 05) She fetched her Dad a newspaper. (TYPE 1) She fetched a newspaper for her Dad. 06) She got some new socks for Mick. (TYPE 2) She got Mick some new socks. 07) They cooked dinner for their friends. (TYPE 2) They cooked their friends dinner. 08) The guide showed us the palace. (TYPE 1) The guide showed the palace to us. 09) Please pass some water to me. (TYPE 2) Please pass me some water. 10) I sold him a second-hand camera. (TYPE 1) I sold a second-hand camera to him. 11) He gave the key to the library to me. (TYPE 2) He gave me the key to the library.

Type 2 = verb + direct object + preposition + indirect object


01) She handead me the certificate. (TYPE 1)

She handead the certificate to me.

The certifcate was handed to me.

02) They pay the gardener £12 an hour. (TYPE 1)

They pay £12 an hour to the gardener.
The gardener was paid £12 an hour by them.


03) They sent a fax to their uncle. (TYPE 2)

They sent their uncle a fax.
A fax was sent to their uncle. (Type 1)


04) Grandad is telling the children a story. (TYPE 1)

Grandad is telling a story to/for the children.
The children was told a story by their granddad.


05) She fetched her Dad a newspaper. (TYPE 2)

She fetched a newspaper for her Dad. type 1

I would not use the word "fetch" here in this context.  Makes her so submissive.  Must be from an old grammar book.  I would use the word, "bring/brought" instead.  


"The dogs were trained to fetch the newspapers for the master".  

"The servants fetched their master his nightly glass of wine."

06) She got some new socks for Mick. (TYPE 2)

She got Mick some new socks.

07) They cooked dinner for their friends. (TYPE 2)

They cooked their friends a dinner.

08) The guide showed us the palace. (TYPE 1)

The guide showed the palace to us.

09) Please pass some water to me. (TYPE 2) If would be better to use "the" instead of "some" because the water is in a container.

Please pass me some water.

10) I sold him a second-hand camera. (TYPE 1)

I sold a second-hand camera to him.

11) He gave the key to the library to me. (TYPE 2)

He gave me the key to the library.
