What images spring to mind when you hear the word "Kanji"? English pronunciation such as L and R sounds is hard for most Japanese to say correctly. In contrast, Japanese pronunciation is simple because there are only 5 vowels. However Japanese characters, what is called Kanji, are very complicated and complex. They are originated in Chinese characters. Most of them have more than two readings. Their shapes are also very different from the English alphabet. Many non-Japanese often say Kanji looks like some kind of design or picture. If you don't understand Chinese languages such as Mandarin and you are studying Japanese as a foreign language, I think you should put off learning difficult Kanji by heart until your Japanese is advanced.
