If you're relaxed, you sit back into your seat.
If you're tense, you might sit forward at the front edge of your seat.
So, if you are frightened while riding in a car with a reckless driver, you can say you took an edge-of-the-seat ride.
I've heard it more commonly as "edge-of-my-seat."
