Do You agree with this expression? Tolerance is the difference between savagery and civilization.

Over time, humans have tended to define "civilized" as those people with more advanced technology. Because this technology gave or gives us an advantage over some other cultures or societies, it was justified with an assertion that the other cultures or societies were "savage". I don't believe in the term "savagery". There are certainly warlike, aggressive cultures, or those with cultural or religious practices I can in no way endorse or support, but that doesn't mean that I am civilized and they are savage or intolerant. There are simply different cultures in this world and there always will be. I think that tolerance of a variety of opinions is the first step to people understanding each other.

We have civilizations in this world where intolerance for ethnic minorities, different political beliefs and different sexual orientation is the norm. Would I call these people savage? No, but I also wouldn't call them worldly or compassionate. I think fear of difference or "the other" is somewhat natural to humans. I would say that tolerance is the mark of an evolved society or civilization. Intolerance can sometimes manifest in savage ways among people that are otherwise reasonable. To overcome intolerance is a noble quest, and I think it bears the reward of greater peace among people and peace of mind for the individual who has overcome their fear/judgement of "the other".
