To put it simply, 'no news like bad news' means that bad news is something that everyone gets interested in, moved by or likes to discuss. As an example, in the newspapers we see more 'bad news' (riots, financial problems, crime) than 'good news' (medical breakthrough, acts of kindness) as the 'bad news' generates more public interest and in turn profit for the news outlets.
