"Sub-" means subordinate or secondary. Or a subdivision or part of a system.

'sub' comes from Latin and it is used to express that something is a part of something else. a sub-system means a smaller system that is being a part of a bigger system. as an example, I can say that a transmission system is a sub-system of the whole automobile system.
