The Taiwanese pronounce 教 in the first tone (jiao(1)) when it is used as a verb, as in 教書，教課，教學，but in the fourth tone (jiao(4)) when used in a nominal phrase like 教授，教室，教堂。

第一声（jiāo）：是个动词，表示把知识传给别人，如：教书、教唱歌、教学生读书。 第四声（jiào）：①多用于与别的字组成一个名词（这种读音最多），如：教父、宗教、教练、教派、教条、教官、教具、教师、教科书、教案、教材、教室、教授、教义、教育等。②作为动词，如：教导、教正、管教、请教、受教、因材施教。

当"教"读Jiāo时，表示<动 v.>teach；instruct；读一声时，有“传授”的意思。 当“教”读Jiào时，表示<动 v.>instruct；ask；order；or<名 n.>religion；a surname。
