Have you tried using flashcards? Or a flashcard program/app like Anki or Lingua.Ly? I found they're very helpful to learn (and remember) new words when i'm studying. Good luck!

In my attempts to learn Spanish, I find that what really makes a word stick in my mind is using it, in conversation, to say something that I actually want to say. For example, I will never forget that the Spanish word for "mortgage" is "hipoteca" because I needed to say "mortgage," and after struggling with "a thing from a bank, a kind of loan, a debt, to buy a house," the person I was speaking to said "Si, una hipoteca." Speaking a word that I need to use is most powerful for me. Reading a word in an interesting book or article that I want to understand is next most powerful. The key seems to be "NEEDING the word because I am USING the language."
