Synonym for the word "middle"
I have just done a worksheet with my class from the book "Times creative English for Primary schools":

It was a crossword about synonyms.

One column was for a synonym for the word "middle":
It shall have 6 letters, starting with d and ending in an e...
I could not answer. I do not know any synonym with d for this word. I have already looked up the Merriam Webster, Oxford dictionary, several synonym dictionaries in the web. I cannot find any.

Has anyone a clue?
I thought of "to middle", however, middle does not exist as a verb (in modern English).

You're wrong about "double", it should be "couple". Then I think you'll get your synonym. :-)

I'm sure you've been down this path already, but are you 100% sure about the 'd' at the beginning? Without the initial 'd', the obvious answer - with the British spelling - would be 'centre'.

I think I found it. The word I have been looking for is "divide".
I said already I thought of "middle" as a verb. That is because I am German. So I associated "to middle" with to make parts, to make something into similar parts. Divide fits this.

I can't think of anything either. However, just FYI I do know of an example where middle exists as a verb in English.  In the game of cricket, we talk about middling the ball which means to hit the ball in the centre of the bat (a strong and clean hit, in other words). "He middled the ball for three runs" for instance.  Obviously this is a niche use you won't come across often or at all but thought I'd mention it.

The crossword looks such:

D and E is given. 5 across is "two", the synonym I put in was double.
10 across is "mistake", the synonym is "error". E therefore is correct; d also...
5 down is given as "middle".

I go crazy...middle has a lot of synonyms, but not one starting with d. I found "distant", but this is actually not a synonym: equidistant would be ok.
